NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

Dear friends,

It is my hope that you are all in good health and back to normality after the holiday season. During the holidays, we woke from our slumber to hear the awful news of a devastating earthquake that caused a Tsumani in the Indian Ocean (Asia). Sometimes it is difficult to understand why such tragedies happen. As I watched various news programs, while enjoying the Christmas holidays with my family in sunny California, I was seeking answers to this tragedy, which seem to be getting worst by the day. Quickly, I realized that we have no control over such events, but could turn to God for comfort during such tragedies. It made me realize how blessed I am to walk in such a graceful life and remain untouched by such sorrow. It serves as a good reminder that our days are numbered on this earth and that we should make the best out of each and every day for the wealth and materials we store up can be gone in a minute, just as in Asia. Remember we can’t take investments or material thing with us when we die. What will really matter will be our spirituality and our contributions to others. An awful disaster in Asia should not distract our focus. It should provide us with the desire to help those who have lost so much and are now unable to help themselves. Let’s try to help and keep in mind the fortunate survivors, for they will need material and financial support long into the future.

As we go into the New Year, I was thinking of a topic for this month and "New Year's Resolutions" came to mind. We have heard and used this term for the last few weeks as many make plans for 2005. As I searched for a proper definition of 'resolution', these three definitions stood out:
a. Finding a solution to a problem.
b. The outcome of a decision to a problem.
c. Firmness of purpose.

I like definition c most, firmness of purpose. Over the past six months, I have been focusing on encouraging you to be positive and seeking your purpose in life. January is an important month to start implementing our plans and goals, as it’s the beginning of a new year. When planning resolutions, it is important that you write down your goals and then take small steps towards achieving them. Remember - One step at a time. Keep in mind the Chinese proverb that states, "A journey of a 1000 miles begins with the first step".

Some tips from my previous newsletters during 2004 might be helpful as you focus on your resolutions for 2005.

  1. "Living a rich life"-avoid negativity and focus on the positive.
  2. "Believe"-believe in your God given gifts and talents and use them for your good and the good of your community.
  3. 'Seek peace'-I wrote about my humanitarian/mission trip to Tanzania and how I gained peace by making time for loved ones and giving back to various communities in need. Can’t say enough here, we should make it our priority to keep peace with others and help others whenever possible.
  4. 'Health'- Good health is a tool for a productive life, so watch your health and treat your body well.
  5. 'Attitude'- Attitudes determines our actions and destination in life. Keeping a good and positive attitude towards yourself and others is important if you are to be successful this year. You and others will benefit greatly as a result.
  6. 'Friends'- True friends will positively influence your life and empower your growth both spiritually and personal.
  7. 'Give thanks'- Be thankful and show your appreciation to those who contribute to your well-being.

Till next time, be of good courage and have a wonderful 2005!

    With blessings,
